Ace Combat 8 Mission 23 Walkthrough

Quick route

  1. Read the displayed score requirement for your difficulty; do not substitute an S Rank target for the clear quota.
  2. Begin clearing a connected group of surface targets, then move to the next strongpoint instead of repeatedly crossing the whole city.
  3. Switch to Gemma and Ventus when the flights arrive if you are attempting their timed optional ace condition.
  4. Maintain the required score through the timed sortie; use the southern Return Line when a resupply is worth the travel.

Ace Combat 8 Mission 23, The Destruction of Expo City, is an annihilation sortie across a city with ground, naval, and airborne targets. Build the score required by your selected difficulty while preserving enough air-to-air capability for the arriving Gemma and Ventus flights.

Mission 23 Quick Route

Choose a connected opening through surface targets and inspect the score you gain before crossing to another part of the city. This gives your first pass a purpose: reduce one strongpoint and establish how your weapon supply compares with the remaining quota.

Keep an air-to-air reserve for the reinforcement flights. A loadout that spends every useful missile on isolated ground contacts can leave you chasing the later aircraft without the tools you planned to use. Decide before sortie whether this is a basic clear or a timed ace attempt.

Objectives and Phase-by-Phase Strategy

Operation Rumbling is a score battle with a timed window. Expo City has several concentrations of defenders rather than one mandatory boss route. The displayed quota varies by difficulty, so the HUD is the useful reference for the run you are flying.

Recommended Loadouts

A multirole aircraft suits the mix of ground defenders, harbor targets, and fighters. Consider a surface-attack special weapon for dense groups and a reliable air-to-air option for the reinforcement phase. Check the actual target compatibility in your equipment screen rather than assuming every surface weapon also works against aircraft.

For a clear, choose ammunition efficiency across the city. For the optional timed flight kills, reserve the weapon you use most reliably against maneuvering aircraft. These two goals can justify different preparations even on the same mission.

If you run out of useful ordnance while far from the next target group, change the route before adding more aircraft purchases. An efficient pass should leave you positioned for another useful attack or a deliberate resupply, rather than pointing away from both.

Target Priorities and Timing

The city’s strongpoints include an airport area to the west, a central harbor, an eastern air base, and a northern urban concentration. Use these as broad route anchors. Inspect the targets currently visible on your map and connect the closest productive groups instead of following a rigid route through already-cleared space.

Against surface concentrations, line up so a pass can cover more than one useful target. Break away with the next group in mind. A series of short productive passes is preferable to an impressive single attack followed by a long empty crossing.

When the reinforcement flights enter, reassess the run’s purpose. If you only need the clear, continue working toward the displayed requirement without letting a difficult fighter consume the rest of the sortie. If the timed optional condition is the goal, shift immediately and track the arriving flights rather than finishing another surface pass first.

Gemma, Ventus, and the Optional Ace Attempt

A qualifying Veteran-or-higher Free Mission replay after finishing the campaign can bring out two additional aces by eliminating all of Gemma and Ventus within three minutes of their appearance. The optional condition concerns both flights, not simply the first aircraft you shoot down.

Prepare by keeping air-to-air ammunition ready before they arrive. Identify the remaining members after each kill and use your wingmen’s attack orders to maintain pressure. Do not assume the condition is complete because the easy targets have disappeared; the more experienced escorts still matter.

The timed condition is optional. If it fails, a basic mission clear remains a separate goal. You can finish the sortie to learn the rest of the route, then make a dedicated collection attempt with a clearer plan for the reinforcement arrival.

How to Fix Common Failed Runs

If the quota is still distant late in the sortie, review the time spent between attacks. Large empty crossings and repeated pursuits of a single fighter are route costs. Try staying within a surface concentration longer before moving across the city.

A southern Return Line is available. Use it deliberately: compare your remaining ammunition, the distance to the line, and the time left for another useful pass. Waiting until every weapon is empty can turn the return into a long interruption at the worst point.

If the optional aces do not appear, check the replay prerequisites and whether every member of both flights was destroyed inside the required window. Do not confuse the mission’s score quota with that separate trigger. A high score alone is not a substitute for the flight condition.

Replay Tips and the Route to Rocky Island

After a completed run, identify which part limited the result: reaching the quota, arriving ready for the reinforcement flights, or spending too long on the return journey. Change that segment while keeping the successful parts of the route consistent.

Mission 22 is the preceding Celaeno operation. Mission 24 takes the campaign onward to the Rocky Island landing, and Mission 25 continues that battle. Their objective structures differ, so use the corresponding route instead of assuming another city-wide annihilation sortie.

Common questions

Mission 23 FAQ

Is Mission 23 a single boss fight?

No. The Destruction of Expo City is an annihilation mission with multiple ground, naval, and aerial target groups.

Which score should I aim for on my first clear?

Use the clear requirement displayed for your selected difficulty. A published S Rank score is a different goal and should not replace the mission quota.

What is the optional condition involving Gemma and Ventus?

On a qualifying Veteran-or-higher replay after the campaign, destroy both entire flights within three minutes of their arrival to trigger the additional ace encounter.

Can I rearm during Mission 23?

A Return Line is provided to the south. Plan the trip with enough time left to reach another productive target group afterward.

Which guide comes after Expo City?

Mission 24 covers The Battle of Rocky Island, Day 1. Mission 25 then continues the operation on Day 2.
